I had many lightbulb moments during Andrew's presentation. Also, some moments of feeling validation: I've completed mahi in rural schools that doesn't mesh neatly with our job description, and it's a relief to know that I'm not the only one.
Having said that, perhaps this is an opportunity to improve our practice and schools' satisfaction.
Our local Principals' Association breakfasts are filled with rural tumuaki. Perhaps a visit from an RTLB representative with a focus on discussing some of the issues raised by Andrew would be fruitful. It would also be an opportunity for us to remind them about 'boundaries'. There's no point reducing principals' overwhelm, only to become overwhelmed ourselves.
Andrew created perspective! Was a great opportunity to hear the 'raw' challenges that our Rural Kura/Principals face and navigate. My key-takeaway: when we come into the schools, we may be the only adult who is available just for their voices to be heard (rant was Andrew's words) - loved this. Another key, don't bring something NEW, hear what/where they are at, and build on this alongside the Kura. Thank you for this opportunity. I am keen to re-watch the recording.
