Higher Order Prompting: Applying Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy to LLM Use in Higher Education
Jonathan Jackson's article, part of the Studies in Technology Enhanced Learning special issue on “Generative AI and Education” which explores how large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT and Copilot can be used effectively in tertiary learning environments, has value for Leadership Teams when considering the use of LLMs for, in particular, the professional growth of new RTLB.
Building on established research into prompt engineering, Jackson offers a theoretical model that aligns types of LLM‑supported activity with Bloom’s revised taxonomy, guiding the design of prompts that foster higher‑order thinking skills (HOTS) without undermining learner agency or academic integrity. The article includes practical prompt examples to support pedagogically (and andragogically) safe development of HOTS with GenAI tools
