Poems

I decided to use AI to make poems for a Year 8 boy who is struggling with reading and writing.

I have been using the SPELD SA decodable readers that were discontinued. Luckily, I had downloaded a number of them when I was working with a group a number of years ago.

I used Perplexity to upload the PDF of the story and a little background, and then told it to write a poem using the words from the book. The boy liked it.

This is what it did:

Here’s an original poem based on the story and main points from “A Trip to Antarctica” (SPELD

SA Set 11), written in short-line, decodable format for your 13-year-old student with dyslexic tendencies. The poem uses key vocabulary and events familiar from the text, supports phonics targets, and maintains a sense of adventure and wonder:

One of my Yr 6 teacher was doing the passage 'The Star Path". Together we explored the use of Copilot to re-text the passage for one of her students who was reading at a CVC level. She was also able to get it to generate simple multiple choice and open ended questions that was within the ability of this student.
